🐶 10 Things I’ve Learned from Living with a Senior Shih Tzu

My 10-year-old Shih Tzu, Yeoreum 🤎

Hi everyone! 🤎

If you’ve been following Life of Yeoreum, you probably already know my little guy, Yeoreum. 🐾

He’s a 10-year-old Shih Tzu, and as he’s gotten older, I’ve noticed so many little changes in our everyday life.

Nothing dramatic happened overnight. It was more like… one day I realized that the things I used to do without thinking had slowly changed. 🥹

So today, I wanted to share 10 things I’ve learned from living with a senior dog.

  1. 🐾 Walks don’t have to be long to be good
A little walk and lots of sniffing. 🐾🌿

When Yeoreum was younger, a long walk was always exciting.

Now, I pay more attention to how he feels rather than how far we walk.

Sometimes a short, relaxed walk with lots of sniffing is more enjoyable than a long one. 🌿

  1. 😴 Sleeping more is part of getting older

Yeoreum definitely enjoys his naps more these days. 😂

There are days when he seems to spend half the day sleeping, and honestly, I’ve learned not to worry about every little change.

What matters is noticing whether his normal routine suddenly changes.

  1. 🩺 Vet visits become more important

As dogs get older, I feel like regular health checks become more important.

I’ve personally found myself paying much closer attention to small changes and visiting the vet more often than I used to.

I’m not a veterinarian, so I always think of my posts as my personal experiences rather than professional medical advice. 🤎

  1. 🍽️ Food suddenly becomes a bigger topic
Mealtime is still one of Yeoreum’s favorite parts of the day. 😋

Okay… this one probably explains why I’ve written so much about food lately. 😂

As Yeoreum has gotten older, I’ve become much more careful about what goes into his meals.

I think more about ingredients, protein sources, portions, allergies, and what works well for him.

But I’m also learning that every dog is different.

  1. 🦷 Dental care matters more than I realized

Senior dogs can have more dental concerns, so I’ve become more conscious of Yeoreum’s teeth and what he can comfortably chew.

Sometimes the little things are worth paying attention to.

  1. 🌡️ Weather can make a bigger difference

Hot summer days definitely require more planning.

I try to avoid walking during the hottest part of the day and pay attention to signs that Yeoreum is getting uncomfortable. ☀️

As he gets older, I feel like keeping him comfortable is just as important as keeping him active.

  1. 👀 Small behavior changes are worth noticing

One thing I’ve learned is to pay attention to Yeoreum’s “normal.”

Is he eating normally?

Sleeping normally?

Walking normally?

Interested in his usual things?

Knowing his everyday habits makes it easier to notice when something feels different.

  1. 🛏️ Comfort becomes a priority
Senior life means taking naps very seriously. 😴🤎

When Yeoreum was younger, I probably didn’t think much about where he slept or how comfortable his resting spots were.

Now I find myself choosing softer, more comfortable places for him to relax.

Because honestly… he deserves it. 🤎

  1. 🥹 You notice how fast time goes

This might be the biggest thing I’ve learned.

Ten years sounds like a long time.

But when you spend those years together, somehow they go by incredibly fast.

Looking at old photos of Yeoreum sometimes makes me think,

“Wait… where did my puppy go?” 🥹🐾

  1. ❤️ Everyday moments become more precious

I think this is the most important lesson.

A walk around the neighborhood.

A quiet afternoon nap.

Eating dinner together.

Sitting next to each other for no particular reason.

These ordinary moments feel a little more special now.

🐾 Life with Yeoreum

Just another ordinary day with my favorite little guy. 🤎🐾

Living with a senior Shih Tzu has taught me that caring for a dog isn’t only about keeping them healthy.

It’s also about noticing, adjusting, and enjoying the little moments together.

Yeoreum may be getting older, but he’s still my little guy. 🤎

And I’m sure there are many more things he’ll teach me along the way.

Thanks for spending a little time with us today. 🐶✨

This is Life of Yeoreum — one ordinary day, one little paw at a time. 🤎
